Leaving Town? Garage Door Checklist Before and After Your Trip

Before You Leave

- Test the door’s balance. Disconnect the opener and lift the door halfway manually, it should stay in place. An unbalanced door left unused for weeks can develop worse issues by the time you’re back.
- Consider the manual lock. If you’re away for an extended trip, engaging the door’s manual lock bar adds a layer of security beyond the opener alone.
- Don’t leave the garage remote in a visible spot in your car if it’s parked at an off-site lot or with a service, this is a surprisingly common way garages get accessed while owners are traveling.
What Can Happen While You’re Away
A garage door that sits unused for an extended period isn’t immune to problems. Cold snaps can still cause a spring to fail even without regular use, since the tension doesn’t relax just because the door isn’t cycling. Opener battery backups can drain and fail silently. And in colder months, an idle door means no one notices a developing issue, like a slowly rusting track, until it’s worse.
When You Get Back
- Test the opener and remote before you actually need them for a full car of luggage
- Listen for new noises, grinding or clunking that wasn’t there before you left often means rollers or hardware settled or shifted
